Nyathuongweno Community Permaculture Project Kenya
Hi! My name is Lorine Auma. I'm married to my husband Joseph Awino and we have four kids; three boys and one girl, we love our family!
My husband and I are working together on our organic permaculture farming project in Homabay county, Kenya near Lake Victoria. I love that my husband Joseph introduced me to organic permaculture by practicing permaculture techniques and sharing his knowledge. Now, we are continuing to educate and train the members of our community, including the younger generation, about how they can create their own organic permaculture gardens at their homes and schools. My husband Joseph and I are trying to eradicate poverty in the community by encouraging permaculture farming, which will allow community members to become self-sufficient through one another.
We have already completed our second phase for the Nyathuongweno community permaculture project, which included the fencing for our farm garden. We are still very appreciative for those who have already donated to our fencing program! May God bless you all. Now we are seeking help to raise the funds for phase 3 of our project, which includes building our four-room farm visitor/volunteer house. This will allow people to stay and sleep when they come and learn more about permaculture organic farming by using permaculture skills, knowledge, and practices.
We are hoping to reach the amount of $13,820 USD or 138,2000KSH in our Kenyan currency. This will allow us to build our four-room farm visitor/volunteer house and plaster it multiple times to increase the structure’s sustainability. The Nyathuongweno community are very humbled to receive any volunteers who are willing to come learn about permaculture with us. We welcome everyone from around the world to our community to learn about permaculture as well as our African cultures.
Here is my husband Joseph Awino’s story from his permaculture progress in the community. Joseph has witnessed his community struggle with a lack of food. As he grew older, he kept looking for a solution to solve the food shortage and eventually he made the decision to create a small garden to grow some of his own food. After completing his permaculture training in Uganda, he returned to his community in Nyathuon Gweno village to teach permaculture design techniques and work through agriculture.
Joseph created a Permaculture Project in Kenya, He joined a group of community youth who are in charge of creating agriculture programs with the aim of improving the standard of living of poor people living within their communities. The main goal of this project is to provide a space for people to work and prosper together. The community is dedicated to growing and sharing its own food. They buy seeds with the neighboring communities of 10 villages and share ideas and teach others the skills to practice sustainable agriculture.
“Food is shared with those who cannot afford it. We hold ourselves to a high standard, therefore we set a good example. " Joseph says. The main purpose of this project is to provide a space for people to work, engage through sustainable organic farming and permaculture skills and methods for individuals, families to learn, teach and experiment in a variety of sustainable and self-sufficient life skills. in organic agriculture. In a community that provides a healthier and earth-friendly alternative lifestyle.
Eradicate poverty:
We adhere to a positive work ethic that recognizes the value of our neighbors and our community at large. Be inclusive, fair, and as efficient as possible while maintaining a productive pace. Holding ourselves to high standards.”
