Happy Birthday to me.... does this respirator make the jumbotron look big?
The irony that my birthday is also World Health Day hits harder this year more than ever. Some of you know but many of you don’t that Saturday I accepted the plea that was issued by New York City for healthcare workers to deploy and help in the COVID-19 crisis that is inundating the city and state. Saturday I packed a car, left Atlanta and arrived here in Times Square Sunday morning. It is as bad as what you see on TV. It is as bad as what you see on the internet. I don’t care where you fall spiritually, politically, or ethically on this crisis but the reality is that it is real and it is terrifying.
Please, please, PLEASE stay home right now. Don’t go out for silly things. Don’t visit your friends. Don’t think that you are an essential worker and leave the house if you know in your core that you aren’t. No one is exempt from what this virus can inflict… if not on you, on any member of your family, community or friends. Young and old, healthy or compromised, it doesn’t care.
For my birthday or just because you’re a good person if you still have any items that you or your family would like to donate there is TREMENDOUS need here. Masks (any kind – homemade, with buttons, surgical, N-95, respirators), hand sanitizer, eye protection/shields, gowns, bleach/sanitizer wipes, fanny packs for us to keep all of our stuff on us during shift because items are going missing if set down, scrubs (blue in any shade), snacks that can be put in pockets because often we are working 12 hours without stopping to sit down and eat. If you have kids, give them something to do and have them make cards and pictures for us to post in the hospitals and hotels to keep us inspired!
Also, if you don't have any of the above items that you can send, many nurses are having people back home support them by ordering from the local restaurants/businesses that are hurting and having them deliver the items to the nurses at the hotels where we can then bring those things to the hospitals. GrubHub, UberEats, DoorDash, ChowNow are all options they use here. (Food, coffee, bagels, ect) If you’re not tech savvy and trust that I’m not a piece of garbage and wont take advantage of a horrible situation I can also give my venmo for you to send money so I can order it for the group as well.
Thank you to everyone for reaching out and checking on me. I’m sorry in advance if I don’t return calls or texts. Mom and Dad are my only priority for updating on how I’m doing and giving details to. Please don’t send me messages saying that I’m crazy, or how scary this is. I know both of these things and don’t need the reminder. I don’t know if I have a job to come home to, I don’t know if I will get sick, I don’t know how long I will be here trying to help.
Instead of birthday wishes just please keep sending positive vibes, thoughts, feelings, or prayers our way, we need anything and everything we can get! Thank you thank you thank you again for everything so far!❤️
