Hi, my name is Michele and I'm raising funds for my friend Nyero to rebuild his produce storehouse, and get his driving licence.

Nyero is young man who lives in northern Uganda, in the province of Gulu near the border with Sudan. He lives with his family and farms 2 acres of his family's land. The food he produces feeds his family and the excess is sold at local markets.

In 2022 a storehouse he built for the produce he grows burnt down when a fire lit by a neighbour to control grass got out of control.

He would also like to obtain his driver's licence, with a view to purchasing a scooter or car. This would help him get his produce to market.

The funds raised here will:
  • pay for the storehouse materials and labour to help Nyero rebuild
  • pay for the costs associated with obtaining his driving licence, including lessons, medical checkup, learner's permit, administration fees and test fees

Nyero is a skilled and hardworking farmer, and has a diploma in pig production from Makerere University. He also is passionate about ecological and regenerative farming, having started on that journey in 2009 with a permaculture certificate obtained on a course run in southern Uganda by the Permaculture Blue Mountains Institute of Australia.

I have known Nyero since 2009. We met on the permaculture course, where I was volunteering and Nyero was a student. Nyero was a teenager then and I decided to support him financially by paying for the remainder of his tertiary education. He was at that time a boarder in a secondary school in the town of Rakai in southern Uganda, and he was under the care of a charity, The Children of Uganda (COU). As a small child he had been placed in the care of the COU and taken from his family because the Lord's Resistance Army, a violent insurgent group operating in the north, was abducting children to turn them into child soliders.

After graduating from high school Nyero began a course in building construction, but it soon became clear that his heart lay in agriculture. So with financial assistance from me he switched tack and began tertiary studies in agriculture at Makerere University in Kampala. He also made his way back home to Northern Uganda and was reunited with his family.

In 2018 the diploma Nyero was studying required an overseas placement. So, with help from myself and friends and colleagues, Nyero visited Australia on a temporary training visa in late 2018 and completed a 6 month placement on a free range pig farm on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria.

I hope you can see your way to supporting Nyero's faming endeavours. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me: [email redacted]
