Support NYT Tech workers!

UPDATE: We are officially on a multi-day ULP strike. We gave @nytimes management months of notice of our strike deadline, we made ourselves available around the clock, but the company has decided that our members aren’t worth enough to agree to a fair contract and stop committing unfair labor practices.
---------------
We, the Times Tech Guild, need your support to win a strong union contract with fair, equitable pay, job security, and protected hybrid/remote work! At the beginning of September, 95% of our members voted to authorize a strike. As we head into the final weeks of this Election season, we want the New York Times to hear us: We are ready to do whatever it takes to get to a fair deal.
We are the 600+ unionized tech workers of The New York Times — software engineers, product managers, data analysts, and designers. We power games like Wordle, Connections and The Crossword. We bring new recipes to your pocket and new Audio formats that make it easier to connect with the journalism we publish. We build, support and grow the numerous NYT websites and apps you know and love.
For over two years we have been bargaining for our first contract. At every turn, NYT management has dragged its feet, disrespected us, and even committed unfair labor practices (ULPs). We need a contract NOW!
Our work is critical to The New York Times’ coverage of the US presidential election. But we need a strong contract to do our jobs effectively, and we are prepared to walk off the job and forgo our paychecks to win that contract.
We’re fighting against management proposals that would only give us 1% raises, leaving massive racial and gender disparities in pay unaddressed.
We, meanwhile, are pushing for the following:
- To address racial disparities in our pay. Currently, the median total compensation for Black employees (across roles in our unit) is $54k less than the median total compensation for white employees (across roles in our unit).
- To ensure that we have real job security. In the status quo, management has gone as far as to fire employees days before a major brain surgery , and has used performance improvement plans / PIPs (which are pretenses to fire employees) in ways that are discriminatory. Earlier this year, we learned that underrepresented groups are disproportionately targeted by management’s arbitrary disciplinary process. 2 out of 3 union members under management’s discipline are women and people of color, despite the fact that they comprise a smaller percentage of the overall workforce.
Going on strike means we lose our paychecks for the duration of the strike. While this is an important sacrifice in order to win a fair contract, many of our union members will need financial assistance, particularly those who are the primary earners for their families. No one deserves to face financial hardship for taking action with their coworkers. Your donations will help us win this fight.
Striking Tech Guild members will be able to request funds, which will be disbursed by unit members Vicki Crosson and Riley Sykes. If we do not strike or need all of the funds raised, we will donate the extra money to another labor cause or strike fund. This fundraiser is member-led and is not affiliated with the NewsGuild, which may not raise money outside of the dues it collects from members.
