Nyx Was Hit By A Car: Let's Get Them Back On Their Feet!
Donation protected
We are two friends of Nyx who are putting together this page as both a call for support and as a way to share about what happened to our pal. If you're reading this, we trust that you care about them, too. Please read on to learn more and how you can help support their healing.
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED
"I stopped at a stop sign, and the next thing I knew, I woke up in a hospital." - Nyx
In early February, Nyx was removed from their car by jaws of life. They were T-boned by a driver going twice the speed limit and woke up in the hospital with a severe traumatic brain injury, a large metal rod in their broken leg, and severe mental confusion. They were held in intensive care for almost two weeks and tended to by an incredible team of close friends.
** Nyx has buds all over and we're trying to reach anyone who’s their friend to donate to this effort. Please share this GoFundMe on your social media and Signal stories, and text around!**
HOW THEY ARE NOW
Even with the support of close friends, Nyx is absolutely struggling in the day-to-day management of recovery. Their full-time job is healing injuries while meeting their basic needs and navigating systems that assume a spouse or relative will be their primary medical case worker. It's hard enough to stay on top of a packed schedule of doctor appointments, the constant maneuvering of billing and insurance, and all sorts of bodily needs – imagine managing all of this while recovering from a traumatic brain injury, using a walker, without personal transportation, and largely alone.
WHY WE LOVE NYX
Wow! Come on! Nyx is a sweet convener, party-maker, researcher, underground Jewish community organizer, tinkerer, mad scientist, performance artist, fermenter of fermented food, puppeteer, KJ, trash artist, jewelry maker, and potter. They think through and help others think through mind-numbing political dilemmas. And are "a deep well-spring of weird ideas and creativity." You know what the world needs more of right now? Nyx.
HOW WE'LL SHOW UP FOR NYX
As a working-class person without family support and after a few seasons of turbulence, the timing of this tragedy was especially hard. After years of various creative fluxes and logistical setbacks, Nyx finally achieved housing stability and nourishing community connections in Portland. They finally entered a sweet chapter of life they worked hard to create.
As a community, we want to create a safety net for Nyx to recover. This could very easily become a desperate situation, but with our help, it doesn't need to be. Nyx won't be able to work for quite a while. Their car was destroyed, which will significantly limit their employment possibilities. As a community, we want to help Nyx rebuild and maintain this stability while they recover. We hope you can join us and help build this safety net.
FINANCIAL BRASS TACKS
We're helping Nyx with their cost of living for at least 6 months. Nyx lives a modest life, so their ongoing living expenses are roughly $1,500/month for rent, food, and other basics. Additionally, to return to work and support themself again, Nyx needs to buy another car.
PLEASE REACH OUT!
Nyx would love to catch up and spend time with you. Please reach out to them by calling them, since texting is more difficult right now. Otherwise, simple texts and a quick read of a "how to talk to someone with a traumatic brain inju" article are appreciated.
UPDATE
Thank you everyone for supporting Nyx’s recovery. They are so grateful for the love and are feeling the support. We have raised the goal to 15k in order to create a more solid safety net as Nyx recovers. As you may know, TBI recovery can be a long road and having resources to support a more easeful transition back to work will be so helpful. Plus, the extra funds will allow them greater access to recovery options not covered by their insurance.
