Graves' Disease Surgery
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Demelza, and I am a teacher here in Maine. Back in September 2022 I was diagnosed with Graves' Disease or hyperthyroidism. Graves' disease is an immune system disorder that results in the overproduction of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism).
While medication has helped control the symptoms of Graves', it has been determined that the best long-term solution for me is to have my entire thyroid gland removed in a surgery known as a thyroidectomy. The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland that resides in the neck. Due to the surgery, I will be on thyroid replacement hormones for the rest of my life.
My surgery was performed on June 20 in Portland. Final cost of the surgery, including follow-up appointments, is $8,000 after insurance. Any help you are able to give is greatly appreciated!
