Dean and Crystal Shackelford are fixtures in the Jax Beach community. Along with their precious 5 year old son, Teddy, they're a vibrant pillar in town--especially with Dean's roots having been raised here for more than 40 years. Recently, however, their world has changed. Dean was recently diagnosed with a Malignant Glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer-and as his family's primary source of income, they are facing daunting financial challenges. And this is why we need your help.

THE STORY

Dean wasn’t feeling well for a couple of weeks after getting over Covid, and after multiple trips to the ER to investigate, he suddenly lost function on the right side of his body. They found bleeding on his brain and discovered that he had a large brain tumor. After emergency surgery, his surgeon felt certain that it was a malignant Glioblastoma, and pathology confirmed their worst fear. After weeks in the hospital with family members taking turns staying with him, Dean was moved to Brooks Rehab Hospital where they worked with him for OT, ST and PT everyday. It had been an entire month since his original ER visit in August 2022, before he was released to begin extensive treatment in September.

Upon arrival home, Dean started a 6 week course of radiation and chemotherapy. While treatment has been tough, he has continued to persevere and improve, showing the strength he and his family have.

Right now the family is unsure of what the future holds and are seeking alternative treatment options and hope to seek further treatment at Duke, or the Moffet center in Tampa, as the treatments locally are limited. They have a long and arduous road ahead, one that they shouldn't have to traverse alone.

So it comes down to the community, the Shackelford's friends, family and network who are humbly asking for contributions to help. We want Dean to fight and beat cancer; not think about bills! They're gracious, compassionate, and kind people, who would never ask themselves for help, so we're doing it for them.

Please consider making a donation. Anything is appreciated. Small amounts add up to make big changes if we work together!
