This is Oakley Nell Lowe. She was born on February 6th, 2015, to Ryan and Darrah Lowe. She is the youngest of three kids. Oakley was born with atypical complex bilateral clubfoot. To correct the clubfoot, doctors do serial castings, in which the patient gets new casts about every week and a half. If an inexperienced doctor casts atypical feet, it generally causes the feet to worsen. Which is what happened to Oakley. She had 18 sets of casts, two tenotomies. The first tenotomies was when she was just 5 months old, and the second, when she was just 8 months old. This is where they snipped her Achilles' tendons in hope to allow a more complete range of motion in the muscle. She also has had several Botox injections over the course of her treatment. Oakley has continued to overcome all these challenges and remains to be a very active and happy child regardless of the many past failed treatments.
Darrah and Ryan recently found Dr. Dobbs through a Facebook support group for Clubfoot. Dr. Dobbs is world renowned for treatment of clubfoot. So much so that one of the braces Oakley will use is called the Dobbs bar. On April 12, 2017, they will start making trips every two weeks to see Dr. Dobbs in St. Lois. It could be as little as 4 trips or as many as 10 trips, depending on how fast her body responds to the treatment.
With them having Tricare, they must see doctors that are in-network providers. Since Dr. Dobbs is an out of network provider, Darrah and Ryan switched to Tricare Standard, so that Oakley may receive the correct medical care to surpass her diagnosis. They will have out of pocket medical costs as well as being financially responsible for their travel and lodging costs. With the unknown number of doctors’ visits, flights from Texas to St. Louis, this is where the cost of her care can add up fast. Not only are they responsible for this unknown added expense, but they also have two other children that they continue to support and care for. Darrah and Ryan will be taking turns traveling with Oakley to St. Louis, while the other one will remain in Texas to care for the rest of their family. Traveling with any toddler is never easy, let alone traveling with one that will be in a cast on both legs.
Despite all of this, Oakley has and remains to be a happy and loving child. With each day, no matter her pain level, she astounds her doctors and family with her incredible strength. She is truly an inspiration to many!
Please consider helping to support Oakley and her family with travel and lodging expenses during this time. Any donation at all, big or small is greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this and please help spread the word.
THANK YOU.
