OBOS Art Installation & Future Projects
OUR BODIES OUR STREETS
Our Bodies Our Streets is an intersectional feminist group campaigning against the culture of street harassment - we believe all have the right to thrive in the city. Our projects span public art, education, grassroot protest and trying to highlight lived experiences as we wiggle our way onto decision making tables. We try and do this using free methods where we can but sometimes funding is necessary to facilitate these aims louder!
DESTROYED SCULPTURE
Our Public Art #reclaimthestreets sculpture was burnt down within a month of it's installation. It was partly kindly funded by our community and designed by 3 volunteer students with poetry contributions from Our Bodies Our Streets supporters.
We have received an outpouring of supportive comments from the people of Sheffield and beyond. As a volunteer grassroot group, we believe this shows that public art and protest, has an important role in starting much needed conversations, outside of our echo chambers, about street harassment, spatial justice, gender equality, misogyny and our right to the city.
As a volunteer group, we rely on the genorosity of our community and the collaboration of ideas and skills with other groups.
WANT TO SUPPORT AS AN ALLY?
We want to continue it's legacy by creating a permanent sculpture within the city, standing as a constant beacon of reclaimation, validating the lived experiences of women and marginalised genders, spark conversations and instigate much needed change for women and marginalised genders! However, we do not have the funds to do this yet (we thought our previous sculpture would last a little longer!) So thank you so much for your support! We believe women and marginalised genders should not be burdened with fixing this - so if you identify as an ally, supporting Our Bodies Our Streets on gofundme is a great way of contributing to change! Your support will enable us to create public art and finance our future community grassroot projects.
NEW PROJECTS GET INVOLVED - YOUR IDEAS COUNT!
We are planning community co-design sessions to plan how our next public art installation will appear - so follow @ourbodiesourstreets and register free as a supporter to watch for updates on how to get involved! All welcome!
