Dear Friends of Odyssey: Thank you for all your support during the COVID-19 shut-down! We are honored by your love, and committed to giving you the coffeehouse you deserve.
The financial reality is, however, that Odyssey needs income to survive during the months of closure. For example, our rent is still due (actually, overdue right now), we owe payments on our start-up loan, there are electricity and gas bills, and Odyssey is still required to maintain two types of business insurance.
These needs are immediate. Will you help us not only survive but thrive during this time?
Our vision has always been to give Ocean Grove the coffeehouse we deserve. Accordingly, our mission is to provide top notch coffee in a vigorous coffeehouse refuge. We want Odyssey to be a place where everyone feels welcome -- where you can come and go as you please, diving deep into a conversation with your best friend about what matters most, or hide your face in a book.
We must be closed til further notice because fulfilling this kind of mission requires precisely the kind of conditions we are aiming to limit during the COVID-19 crisis.: lots of folks hanging out in a small space!
So the question that has been keeping me up at night lately is: how can Odyssey fulfill its mission right now? How can it provide you with its distinctive gifts? Sure, I can meet you at the curb to sell you delicious whole bean coffee, but what about the "house" in coffeeHOUSE?
How can I give you the experience you've come to appreciate?
In return for your financial generosity, I cannot give you a coffeehouse right now. But I can still create the conditions for the kinds of conversations you have in Odyssey.
I can give you classical literature and philosophy.
My other life, afterall, is teaching and researching ancient Greek and Roman languages, literatures, and histories. With a Ph.D. in Classics and 10+ years of college teaching, I am eager to share with you some of my favorite books and ideas from the ancient world.
Starting early April, I will be posting short videos on our Instagram aimed to inspire, enchant, uplift, and empower you with the likes of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, Plato's Apology and Symposium, Aristotle's Ethics, and Seneca's Philosophical Letters. Check us out @OdysseyCoffeeOG.
If you share our vision for Ocean Grove and its coffeehouse refuge, and if my sessions on classics add value to your life, will you consider helping us by donating?
Here we go -- onward in our own fascinating story about small businesses in America, and giving, and connection, and narrative, and hope.
Thanks for believing with and in us.
Joy and peace,
Joey
