Update 2/15/23:
Officer Rivera is in good spirits, but in LOTS of pain… I was able to get an update of what happened that night:
Officer Rivera and another officer responded to a stranded food truck on the 820 on ramp to 35W. 2 additional vehicles ended up stopping behind the patrol cars (1 broken down and other stopped for no reason) posing a danger because it blocks emergency lights… Officer Rivera laid a total of 2 flare lines signaling motorists to move left to pass. Officer Rivera did not jump off the bridge as previously thought. Officer Rivera jumped onto the concrete barrier and held on with both arms because a large truck traveling at a high rate of speed barreled straight towards the right shoulder where he and the third vehicle were. The large truck hit the third vehicle launching it forward, crushing Riveras right arm. Rivera still hung by one arm and then the large truck followed and struck his face and left arm causing Rivera to fall 40-50 feet onto concrete. The large truck hit the third vehicle so hard that officers said it was compressed from a 4 door to a 2 door. Had Officer Rivera not reacted the way he did he would’ve been crushed with no chance of survival.
Again the investigation is still ongoing. Please continue to pray for all involved, the officers and firemen that responded to this horrific scene.
