Official Roy Hackett Mural Restoration
This Go Fund Me was created by Michele Curtis for the Seven Saints of St. Paul’s project.
On Wednesday 12th August 2021, Roy Hackett MBE's mural was damaged beyond repair and emergency services were called to the scene on Byron Street in St. Pauls Bristol, where large sections of rendering fell off the side of the building, completely destroying his mural.
Mr. Roy Hackett is a beloved community elder, activist and vanguard of the Windrush generation. His story is vital to the history of Bristol and the UK. In 1963 he campaigned side by side with his fellow, Commonwealth Co-ordinated Committee members; Hon. Owen Henry, Barbara Dettering, Audley Evans, Dolores Campbell and Clifford Drummond in the Bristol Bus Boycott. They were later joined by Carmen Beckford MBE in 1967, when they planned the very first St. Pauls Carnival in 1968. In 2015, they were affectionately dubbed the Seven Saints of St. Pauls by Michele Curtis in her debut exhibition by the same name.
Michele Curtis is a multi-award-winning artist, heritage interpreter and founder of the Iconic Black Britons and Seven Saints of St. Pauls creative and digital placemaking project.
What began as a one off exhibition has evolved into an innovative creative & digital placemaking project, that includes seven large scale murals throughout the once marginalised community of St. Pauls. There is an accompanying mobile app: https://apps.cactus.co.uk/seven-saints/ and a newly developed AR guided tour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOKzQXeNz5Q. All of which were developed to inspire and educate everybody, about Bristol's rich and diverse history. Unfortunately, now incomplete without Mr. Hackett's mural. Please see the following press links to view the damage: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-58181712 and https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/we-repaint-it-vows-shocked-5775662
The unfortunate damage to his mural is a great loss to the community and city. I hope that with your support to share this go fund me with your network, all donations received we will be able to replace the mural of Mr. Roy Hackett MBE.
This isn't just Black history; this is British history!
