Oglala Sioux Tribe PRIDE Month 2021

On May 26, 2021, a group of youth sponsored a Resolution to make June LGBTQ2S+ PRIDE Month for the Oglala Sioux Tribe to celebrate and uplift the LGBTQ2S+ community.  The Office of the Vice President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe is supporting these youth and embarking on some events never done before on the Pine Ridge Reservation in an effort to promote and celebrate the place of our LGBTQ2S+ relatives within our community.  Specifically, our focus this year centers around supporting LGBTQ2S+ youth.

One of the most exciting events we have planned is a LGBTQ2S+ Woitan Wicayuwitapi (gathering) and round dance for youth.  At the camp youth will learn about the traditional roles, responsibilities, and gifts of LGBTQ2S+ individuals in Lakota society.  They will participate in traditional healing, talking circles, and other activities to reinforce self-esteem and cultural identity.  Further, we seek to establish a network of community support and peer engagement to embody the Lakota virtue of Mitakuye Oyasin (We are all related).

Some of the other events we will offer include a Color Run, Walk, and Sashay to promote LGBTQ2S+ pride and physical wellness in our community, a social media campaign, a LGBTQ2S+ community movie screening and discussion, and a youth panel to name a few.
