--Update 12/4/2019--
We have reached our original goal! Thank you for your support! We have changed the campaign to reflect sending more individuals with disabilities to camp this summer.
Okemos Special Needs Day Camp is a program designed to foster a supportive and nurturing atmosphere of social interactions among special needs children. Our goal is to promote an environment of tolerance and respect for each other while enjoying a wide variety of activities.
We work hard to provide campers experience in building social skills through peer interaction and developing self-esteem, confidence, and leadership. In doing so, we provide exposure to the community environment as fully as possible.
For the first time in the 42 years of our history, we are facing a lack of funding from our primary source of assistance – Respite Care through Community Mental Health. As such, we are humbly reaching out to ask for your support.
Due to this lack of funding, the camp will be running at a deficit. Without support, several campers will not be able to attend as our scholarship fund has been depleted and we have no means to offer them scholarships.
The cost for an individual to attend camp for 7 weeks is $1,422. The cost for campers to take a bus to the local pool is $120. The cost for 40 campers to go the movie theater is $400. The cost for bussing for the entire summer is $4,500. The cost to rent a pool for 14 camp visits is $840. These are only a few examples of some of the costs associated with offering this special opportunity to these amazing individuals.
With your support, we will be able to continue to provide a fun and safe environment for our campers to meet new friends, be themselves, and engage in new and exciting social activities that will challenge them to try new things and build a collection of skills they can apply throughout life.
As the director of Okemos Special Needs Day Camp, I will withdraw the funds and deposit them into the OSNDC fund. This fund is through Okemos Public Schools within the Okemos Community Education branch. This money will provide scholarships for campers who could not otherwise afford to attend camp.
