Old School Roof

The Old National school has been in Hampton St, Balbriggan since1859. For 150 years it served the community in its role as a national school. The growth of the Town and the ever younger population meant that the school population had outgrown it and the school moved to a new site on the Naul Road in 2009.
The school building however has a continuing role in the Town and now it hosts the integration services provided by Cairde and previously by Failte Balbriggan. Balbriggan is the fastest growing town in Ireland and has the most diverse and youngest population. For many of those who have recently arrived in Ireland Cairde provides assistance for them to get acclimatised to living in Ireland. Various other services also use the premises for their activities.
St Patrick's Brass & Reed Band have been using the hall at the rear of the school as their Band Room for more years than anyone of us can remember. The Balbriggan Dramatic Society have also used the premised for their rehearsal's over the years. The Hall was originally the Girls school and the was the Parochial Hall for the Parish.
The building at the ripe old age of 161 is starting to feel its age and in particular the roof is no longer doing the job it was there for - keeping the water out. The roof of both buildings have now to be replaced and hopefully will last another 160 years!
The total cost of the project is in the region of €165,000, assuming nothing too bad is found once the slates come off!
To date €145,000 has been raised. We are very grateful to the Heritage Department for a grant of €25,000 and the Progressive Credit Union for a grant of €20,000. St George's Parish are contributing €100,000 and at this stage we are looking to fund the shortfall without having to take on borrowing.
The building was specifically designed for Balbriggan and now is part of the architectural heritage of the Town. Through its tenants it continues to provide a useful service for the Town's citizens.
Your support of this project will ensure that this unique building remains in operation and continues to provide a base for learning in the Town.
