Save the Omni Commons, a community space!

The Omni Commons is an innovative community space in North Oakland that is facing a struggle to survive the financial challenges the coronavirus pandemic presents. We’re reaching out to the community with a plea for your support in meeting this challenge.



As you may know, four years ago a group of collectives dedicated to social change purchased the former Italian Social Club located at 4799 Shattuck Avenue in the Temescal District of North Oakland. In the 1990s the building became a nightclub known as the Omni. Our goal was to own and operate the 20,000 square foot building as an innovative DIY all volunteer community space addressing the inequalities in our community. 



Since then, we have offered event space to the community and workspace to member collectives on a sliding-scale basis. The Shelter-in-Place order issued by the Alameda County Public Health Department in mid-March in response to the Covid-19 crisis prohibits the gatherings that have rented our event space and provided half of the income to operate the Omni Commons. Rent from our member collectives provides the other half. 


This loss of income from event rentals threatens the Omni’s survival because we must re-finance our commercial loan by May 1, 2021 and we need to raise $50,000.00 to make the loan payments until we are able to fully re-open for large events.


Meanwhile, the Omni has become a local distribution site for the curbside communities in North Oakland. We formed the North Oakland Mutual Aid Drive in collaboration with other organizations. We’re using the large ballroom to gather canned food, water, masks, hand sanitizer and other items. We hope to continue this distribution network throughout the pandemic and make it a permanent part of our work in the community. 


The Omni is facing a serious economic situation in which we could lose the building if we do not secure enough funding to show potential lenders that we can make payments during this prolonged health emergency. So, we’re asking you to make a generous contribution.  Members of all our collectives thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
