One Love, Two Battles: Cancer & Caregiving

Hi Everyone,

My name is Valerie Narvaez. For those who don't know I am on a journey that has brought me face-to-face with some of life's most daunting challenges.

Navigating the maze of life has become immeasurably more challenging since my cancer diagnosis this year. The initial shock of learning about my condition was overwhelming, but what followed was a cascade of relentless struggles. Balancing my health while being a full-time caregiver for my beloved grandmother, who suffered two strokes in 2023 and 2024, disabled, and diagnosed with the beginning of Dementia has tested my limits daily. The process of seeking assistance with disability benefits and Medicare/Medicaid has been agonizingly slow, filled with never-ending paperwork and administrative hurdles. Trying to hire a caregiver who can understand and meet my grandmother's needs adds another layer of stress.

On top of all this, the financial strain feels unbeatable, as medical bills and daily expenses pile up. The emotional rollercoaster has been nothing short of grueling, with waves of fear, anxiety, and exhaustion washing over me constantly. Maintaining my independence has always been a point of pride, but this journey has pushed me to the edge, forcing me to confront the reality that I can't do this alone. Putting my personal story out there and asking for financial help has been one of the hardest steps I've taken, as it goes against my nature.

However, I've come to realize that vulnerability is not a sign of weakness, but a testament to my strength and resilience. Each day is a battle, but the love and bond we share gives me the strength to push forward every day and the hope for a brighter future keeps me moving forward.

Me llamo Valerie Narvaez. Para aquellos que no lo saben, estoy en un viaje que me ha llevado a enfrentar algunos de los desafíos más intimidantes de la vida.

Navegar el laberinto de la vida se ha vuelto increíblemente más desafiante desde mi diagnóstico de cáncer este año. La conmoción inicial de enterarme de mi condición fue abrumadora, pero lo que siguió fue una cascada de luchas implacables. Equilibrar mi salud mientras soy cuidadora a tiempo completo de mi querida abuela, quien sufrió dos derrames cerebrales en 2023 y 2024, está discapacitada, y fue diagnosticada con principios de demencia, ha puesto a prueba mis límites diariamente. El proceso de buscar asistencia con los beneficios por discapacidad y Medicare/Medicaid ha sido agonizantemente lento, lleno de trámites interminables y obstáculos administrativos. Intentar contratar a un cuidador que pueda entender y satisfacer las necesidades de mi abuela agrega otra capa de estrés.

Además de todo esto, la presión financiera se siente invencible, ya que las facturas médicas y los gastos diarios se acumulan. La montaña rusa emocional ha sido nada menos que agotadora, con olas de miedo, ansiedad y agotamiento que me invaden constantemente. Mantener mi independencia siempre ha sido un motivo de orgullo, pero este viaje me ha llevado al límite, obligándome a confrontar la realidad de que no puedo hacerlo sola. Poner mi historia personal allí y pedir ayuda financiera ha sido uno de los pasos más difíciles que he dado, ya que va en contra de mi naturaleza.

Sin embargo, he llegado a darme cuenta de que la vulnerabilidad no es un signo de debilidad, sino un testimonio de mi fuerza y resistencia. Cada día es una batalla, pero el amor y el vínculo que compartimos me da la fuerza para seguir adelante cada día y la esperanza de un futuro más brillante me mantiene en movimiento.
