Open Slopes PDX is an equity-driven organization that drives spatial and cultural change within snow sports by connecting with BIPOC and 2SLGBTQ+ riders of all abilities. We work to minimize barriers to participation for Black, Brown, Indigenous, and queer people, one way being our BIPOC Shred program.
Our BIPOC Shred series creates opportunities for Black, Brown, and Indigenous folks to learn how to ski or snowboard in community and at zero cost. We provide rental gear, apparel, accessories, lift tickets, transportation, and the opportunity for new riders to get some tips from a BIPOC mentor on snow. Since our first event, we have successfully hosted over 50 participants, paid 14 BIPOC mentors, and brought on two more Brown organizers to support this series.
We are super stoked to announce what we have lined up so far:
- We will kick off the season earlier with our first event in January and our last one in April
- We're adding one event so we'll have four BIPOC Shred sessions throughout the season !
- So we decided to host an event for our pals in the Seattle-surrounding area !!
- We'll still have three events based at Mt. Hood, with one being our first-ever QTBIPOC Shred Day !!
Your support will help cover the following expenses.
- $200 BIPOC mentor stipend
- Participant and mentor transportation reimbursement
- Lift tickets for our participants, mentors, and BIPOC Shred organizers
- PDX-SEA travel expenses for our BIPOC Shred organizers
Any unused funds will be redistributed to other efforts to get more Black, Brown, and Indigenous people on the mountain, including one or a combination of the following:
- Gear giveaway
- Course/certification scholarship
- Small group/1 on 1 BIPOC mentor meetups
- Building a gear library
- Supporting other orgs (check out POC Nordic, Unlikely Riders, Edge Outdoors, and Women of Winter!)
