Oral Cancer and Mandibular reconstruction Surgery

Hi everyone thank you for taking the time to read this. This go fund me has been created to collect funds to support our mother Mayda Leticia Mejia in her long time battle with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma. While she was cured of her cancer back in her home country Honduras, the aggressive chemo therapy treatment resulted in bilateral pathologic fractures due to osteoradionecrosis, severe posterior deformity of the mandible, dysphagia, dysarthria, and no quality of life. Thankfully she was able to travel to New York, United States where she found hope of having the surgery that she could only dream of.

Thanks to a wonderful team of surgeons on 4/28/2023 Mayda underwent 12+ hour surgery for mandibular titanium plate reconstruction. We are so grateful that the surgeons took on her case, and although they are helping us with self pay rates the medical bills have rapidly accumulated.

We are asking for any assitance that you may be able to provide as every little bit helps. This has been a long, painful, and extremely difficult journey but we are hopeful that with time our mother will fully recover, and will be able to start living a normal life she once had. She will possibly need additional surgeries in the near future including teeth implants as she lost them during this painful process.

Hola a todos, gracias por tomarse el tiempo de leer esto. Esta colecta ha sido creado para recaudar fondos para apoyar a nuestra madre Mayda Leticia Mejia en su larga batalla contra el cancer de células escamosas de la cavidad oral. Mientras se curaba de su cáncer en su país de origen, Honduras, el tratamiento agresivo de quimioterapia resultó en fracturas patológicas bilaterales debido a osteorradionecrosis, deformidad posterior severa de la mandíbula, disfagia, disartria y pérdida de calidad de vida.

Afortunadamente, pudo viajar a Nueva York, Estados Unidos, donde encontró la esperanza de someterse a la cirugía con la que solo podía soñar.

Gracias a un maravilloso equipo de cirujanos, en 04/28/2023, Mayda se sometió a una cirugía de más de 12 horas para la reconstrucción mandibular con placa de titanio. Estamos muy agradecidos de que los cirujanos se hicieran cargo de su caso y, aunque nos están ayudando con tarifas de pago propio, las facturas médicas se han acumulado rápidamente.

Estamos pidiendo cualquier asistencia que pueda proporcionar, ya que todo cuenta. Este ha sido un viaje largo, doloroso y extremadamente difícil, pero tenemos la esperanza de que con el tiempo nuestra madre se recupere por completo y pueda comenzar a vivir una vida normal que alguna vez tuvo.

Muchísimas gracias por su tiempo. Adjuntamos algunas fotos de Mayda antes y después de la cirugía para mostrarle su lenta recuperación ya que todavía estaba hospitalizada con un tubo de alimentación y respiración conectado a ella. Posiblemente necesitara cirugias adicionales en el futuro incluyendo implate de dientes ya que los perdio durante este doloroso proceso.
