Organic & sustainable Farming Cafe in Malaysia

Introduction

Hi, I am Mo, a lawyer and human-rights advocate based in Berlin, but work & travel take me places around the world. During the course of my travels, in 2015 I met Harry, a very talented and kind-hearted man from Malaysia and we became close friends ever since.

Unluckily, Harry was retrenched from his job and with the current economic situation due to the pandemic, things are not easy. I know that he is struggling with his life at the moment. Despite the hardship, he continues to do what he could to get by and has never stopped being kind or helpful to others.

Recently, he was presented with a great opportunity to combine things he really loves –cooking, food and nature - and turn it into a business, a “nature appreciation café” in a tropical fruit orchard which will also serve as a hub for the organic farming community. He’s calling it “The Shack”.

His determination & dedication had opened my heart to help him and be part of this cause. I’m creating this fundraising in support for Harry not just because he is a good friend, but also due to his vision and aspiration for the café & orchard. I hope this will help Harry to continue with his plan and inspire other people too, to be kind and helping each other no matter where or who we are. We are the world.

About The Shack

The Shack is a café set in a tropical orchard that connects to both food and nature lovers. The inspiration for The Shack arises from good friends who are very fond of food and nature around the world. But it’s not just about food – The Shack will also be a place where they plan to educate and share knowledge about organic farming and sustainable practices in local agriculture. According to Harry, he daresay that they are among a pioneer on this concept in Malaysia.

The Shack is planned for opening by January 2022. The owner of the orchard has been kind enough to provide a suitable premise for the café, but they’re still unable to start due to lack of funds. Without your help, opening of The Shack as planned may be further delayed, however they will still continue with this mission so they could deliver their aspiration.

Aspiration

Other than offering a relaxing cafe environment with quality and tasty affordable food, Harry wants to bring the costumers closer to nature with appreciation of the environment. The orchard owner is a renowned local botanist who are concerned about agriculture sustainability and organic farming. With his support and collaboration, Harry has planned many activities at The Shack to educate the community on organic & sustainable farming, such as promoting organic fertilisers for the soil, organic methods to control pests, composting at home, garden or farms, and applying less-waste practices. Their pledge is to promote natural and sustainable methods as much as they could. Not only that, Harry also aspires for the establishment to boost the local economy by creating job opportunities and supply chain demand.

There is one guy that you should know at The Shack!

Harry is the person who will run The Shack together with some friends. Harry was a professional corporate in Change Management & Processes Management, but he was retrenched prior to the pandemic COVID-19. However, he is rising above the challenges thrown at him in life to pursue his ambition in the field of food and beverage which has always been his dream. He also aspires to become a champion in organic farming and sustainable lifestyle. He hopes that The Shack will be a progressive medium for him to deliver his vision & mission.

• To build accommodation for our future international volunteers where we hope we can travel at ease again very soon.
