I got a call last night at 5:13pm that a mare gave birth and the band was not letting the foal near the mom. Caller said the foal has been kicked and the band is being very protective of the mare. This went on for about 5 hours before we got the call. When our team arrived they could tell the situation wasn’t good and seen the little one take a kick to the head and was told the little one hasn’t even nursed. It is never an easy decision to take a foal from its family but this one was very obvious it would not survive without us. Our volunteers picked up the colt and immediately transported to Comstock Equine Hospital for care. The vet team came out immediately and took the colt in did bloodwork and determined that he didn’t have moms colostrum, so he never nursed. They did IV plasma infusion to get him the supplemental support he needed to survive. After the infusion they were able to offer him milk replacer. He would be on watch overnight as these littles can crash fast, the vet told me they would call if he started to take a bad turn. I didn’t get a call overnight so hopefully we will have an encouraging call this morning of his status. This is our second foal rescue this year, vet bills, milk replacer and all the necessary supplies that go with it are expensive.
