Orting Senior Center Remodel, Expansion and Upgrades
A hidden “gem” inside the Orting community is the
Orting Senior Center currently located in the Orting School District #344 Transportation building located along
Main Street. The Senior Center is a private, non-profit organization intended to serve the Senior community
fifty-five (55) years of age and older. Decades ago, the transportation building was part of the old high school
where classes such as biology and French were held. The Senior Center rents space that was once the Home
Economics classroom - if you can believe that! This space, however, has become too small for our growing
needs.
Good fortune saw the Senior Center generously gifted a larger building and its property (Orting Christian
Church – 112 Varner St SE) earlier this year; however, funds have to be raised to add and upgrade key spaces:
a commercial kitchen, ADA compliant restrooms, a senior food pantry room, along with laundry and shower
facilities. Plans also include back up power to allow the building to act as a shelter during times of power
outages and inclimate weather.

Since the start of 1989, the Center has provided social and recreational programs, many of them free in order
to help local seniors. Many of these seniors have ties to Orting going back decades as parents, kids, friends,
family, and ALUMNI. However, groceries and prepared meals have become the primary concern these last few
years. In 2019, 3,148 meals were served. When COVID hit, food insecurities sky rocketed and meals served
jump up to 8,290 in 2020. New seniors join every month. In 2021 the center is on pace to serve a projected
11,000 meals. Along with daily lunches, the site provides a Senior Food Pantry (Foodbank) offering bread,
produce, meats, dairy, canned and shelf stable foods to help supplement the rising costs of food for seniors.
Many seniors will forego nutritious foods to pay for medical bills, basic needs and prescriptions.
This effort is not going to be cheap. The current estimate is $900,000 to complete the entire project. The
primary source of funding will come from private, county and state grants to cover the bulk of this cost.
However, donations received in the interim have gone to and will go toward smaller tasks and projects for the
building overhaul. To date, the building fund has collected donations totaling just over $31,000. The goal is to
be in the new building fully by January 2023.

The Orting Senior Center, a 501(c)(3) non – profit organization (# 94-3101716), is accepting donations
throughout the year. So, any amount you can contribute will be greatly appreciated. Donations can be sent to
the Orting Valley Senior Center – P.O. Box 104 – Orting, WA 98360, dropped off at the center or submitted
online via GoFundMe (https://gofund.me/d4d6e9bb). All who donate may request a receipt for tax purposes.
