Oscar de Jesus Quiñones Disla, affectionately referred to as “Negro”, was born in Laguna Salada, Dominican Republic on January 18, 1942. His story is one of hard work and sacrifice and represents a true American success story. Coming from humble beginnings in a small countryside town in the Dominican Republic, Oscar used education as the opportunity to achieve his best and provide for his family. He loved books, spoke 3 languages and had a passion for world history ... quoting dates and facts in every conversation. As a result of his hard work, Oscar earned a scholarship in 1963 to study abroad in Spain, a proud accomplishment for his family. Upon graduation, Oscar migrated to the United States in 1966 and later reconnected with Elena de los Angeles Quiñones Ruiz from Jaibon, Dominican Republic. They married in 1971 and together established roots in the United States, opening their home to many family and friends to join them, study and create new opportunities for themselves and generations to follow. He was the catalyst for change in his family’s life, helping to bring many of his siblings through the American immigration system.

Oscar was an honest man full of grit and integrity going about his life the right way; never wronging anyone, followed the rule of law and never asked for anything that he couldn’t earn himself. Oscar emphasized the importance of education and his work ethic onto his children stating that “knowledge is the one thing no one can ever take away from you.”

Oscar’s family is raising funds that will be used for education and literary needs for aspiring children in his home town of Laguna Salada, creating new opportunities for future generations.
