Oscar Waugh Cancer Treatment Support Fund

A few weeks ago, the Waugh’s thought their almost 14 year old son, Oscar, had a persistent sinus infection that wasn’t responding to antibiotics. A trip to the emergency department in Charlottetown eventually led to the discovery of a mass in his sinus. The next 10 days were a terrifying blur for Oscar’s family as he underwent numerous tests, biopsies, etc., first at the QEH hospital in Charlottetown, and then at the IWK in Halifax, where Oscar was moved after the pain he was experiencing became unbearable and difficult to control. A barrage of tests ensued as a team of doctors from various specialties and other health care professionals at the IWK hospital worked tirelessly to get to the bottom of Oscar’s medical issues.
It has been confirmed that Oscar does have a cancerous tumor in his sinus. Thankfully, the team at the IWK worked rapidly to diagnose it and he has already begun a lengthy treatment regime that includes seven weeks of daily radiation treatments and 42 weeks of chemotherapy (and many, many needles and related medical appointments!). Oscar will remain in Halifax with his mom, Catherine, for the duration of radiation treatments (Dad, Trevor, is now back in PEI but he and siblings Grace and Harry will make some trips to visit and provide relief as well). After that, he will be splitting his time between home in PEI and many trips back to the IWK over the next year as he continues chemotherapy treatments that need to be done on an inpatient basis and are not available in PEI.
While Oscar’s prognosis is good, there is a very long road ahead for the family, and many unexpected expenses, such has lengthy stays in Halifax, travel to and from NS, bridge fees, medical costs not fully covered by their health plan, and Catherine is unable to go back to work until Oscar is healthy again. We are hoping to relieve some of the financial burden and stress they are enduring as they go through this difficult time. Any support you can give this amazing family would be greatly appreciated!
