Oscar's Moving Out Fund

My friend Oscar (not his real name) is a Black trans college student at Howard University trying to move out of an abusive home. After being outed as transgender at 14, his mom gave him the ultimatum of recanting his identity or ending up homeless. Every few weeks since then, Oscar’s mom has asked him if the “I wanna be a boy” thing was over.

Oscar is now nineteen and is tired of being forced to pretend to be someone he is not. Oscar’s mom has never allowed him to get a job. Going to school in DC he was hoping to get a job while there. However, because he's immunocompromised, he’ll be unable to get a job in the midst of this pandemic. Oscar has tried for years to brush past the rampant transphobia in his home. His dysphoria and depression are only getting worse as time passes.


The threat of being kicked out goes deeper than losing just his home. Oscar will not be able to bring any of his personal items with him. This means that he has to buy his own clothing, car, phone, and laptop or he will be unable to do his work while being independent. Oscar truly needs any and all help he can get because his mental health is rapidly declining and I’m afraid he won’t be able to make it through more years of this.
