Ostomy Reversal Surgery Expenses
Donation protected
My name is David Cooper. In May of 2023, I moved back to New England from Montana to begin an exciting new job. I instead found myself in a hospital in rural Maine, needing emergency surgery for severe complicated Diverticulitis. The surgery to remove my sigmoid colon saved my life but left me with an unexpected temporary Ostomy. Since I had just moved to the state, my insurance had yet to kick in and I was billed 95,000 out of pocket. Unable to complete my job duties, I was forced to spend my recovery period by moving myself, my husband, and our 2 pets into my childhood bedroom at my parent's house.
I immediately began working in MA as soon as I was physically able. I was fortunate enough to secure employment in Boston at a downtown hotel, private insurance, and get in contact with a surgeon who has put me on the road toward Ostomy reversal. I now rent an apartment in Stoughton with my husband who also works in town.
My reversal is scheduled for March 15th, and I will be unable to work for one month. I have applied for PFML, but I was denied my claim because I had just moved back to Massachusetts, and the benefit only looks at the income I earned in this state.
My employer will only provide me with 32 hours of sick time.
I am humbly asking for support for me and my family as we navigate such uncertain times. I will be incredibly grateful for any help I can receive.
