Other Avenues opened its doors in 1974 by the participants of the Food Conspiracy, a grassroots movement of neighborhood food buying clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area dedicated to buying and distributing wholesale organic & sustainable food among themselves. Driven by the spirit of sustainable communities, rejecting war/agro-chemicals, and access to healthy food, the clubs expanded and opened over a dozen cooperative storefronts like Other Avenues, along with a large warehouse and other supporting organizations. Collectively calling themselves The People’s Food System, with the motto “Food for people, not for profit,” these stores thrived for over a decade. By the 1990s most of the stores had closed their doors, but Other Avenues remains open today, preserving the legacy of the People’s Food System.

On Saturday October 19th, 2024, Other Avenues will celebrate our 50th Anniversary with an epic block party on the Great Highway at Judah St (12pm-6pm). We are partnering with the Network of Bay Area Worker Coops (NoBAWC) to also celebrate their 30th anniversary, and Friends of the Great Highway Park! Not only will we feature food, beverages, children's activities, and educational booths run by coops, nonprofits and community groups with whom we have worked over the years, but the event will feature a full lineup of local musicians and performances. We're hoping to go all out with a mix of historical interviews and presentations, to fun activities for the whole family!

Our budget for this event is $10,000, and we hope to share some of the costs to hire bands, performers, as well as the costs of city permits and other supplies.

Individuals that donate $200 or more will receive a 50th Anniversary OA T-shirt!

FREE block party celebrating Other Avenues’ 50th Anniversary and Network of Bay Area Worker-Owned Coops (NoBAWC) 30th anniversary! Come out to ocean beach in San Francisco from 12pm-6pm to celebrate the legacy of Bay Area worker-owned coops and local food systems during coop month!

Join us for local musicians, vinyl DJ’s, performances, coop storytelling, interactive games, comedy, flamenco dance, family-friendly activities, free samples, vendor/organizational tabling, food trucks and worker-owned coop and sustainable food system education and advocacy!

Activities for all ages, childcare support, accessible ramp from Judah and Lower Great Highway, and serviced public bathroom at bottom of ramp.
