Our dad was life flighted to SLU on Friday November 18. He had fallen 2 weeks prior off the back of a truck onto some gravel helping our grandfather he did not have any visible wounds just pain. The Friday before he went to the er for the pain and they said it was arthritis sent him home. Wednesday he went back in excruciating pain they said it was bursitis and gave him three shots of Cortizone and steroids and sent him home. (The new doctor said this was like pouring gas on a fire was not a good thing)Friday he became in so much pain he could not move. He was covered in sweat. Our mom (Wendy bishop)called the ambulance and they made the comment they were going to have to life flight him to the city they took him to a smaller hospital, where they then had to transport him to SLU, the trauma hospital. there we learned he had necrotizing fasciitis (the flesh eating bacteria) in his right arm. They took him into immediate surgery to cut infection out of his arm and learned the next day is a infection in his lungs. They had to go in and do surgery again for more debridement. after that surgery he did not come off the ventilator. They later learned infection in his lungs is the necrotizing fasciitis, and also has it is his blood stream. He also has MRSA fighting against him. One thing this bacteria can cause is cirrhosis of the liver, but he already has that so that’s working against him as well. They tried to take him off the ventilator on thanksgiving but they had to immediately put him back on due to his lungs being so infected he could not breathe well he was taking 35 breaths per minute. He has three daughters and we are all in Florida. When we learned of this we drove to St. Louis as well as our sister n law. He lives up there with our mom. We did have to come home this past week, but are doing everything we can to make sure our mom and dad are taken care of. Our mom is there at the hospital 24 hours a day. Today Tuesday the 29th dad will be going in for surgery #3 on his arm to remove infection. His lungs are looking worse and infection is growing faster then the antibiotics are working. They will be placing our dad on a trach in the next 4-5 days. Our parents live a hour and a half from the hospital and dad is the sole provider. We are asking for help for our mom as she has to get back and forth when she can’t stay, bills, and dad will be coming home on a trach and travel back and forth for doctors will be expensive. Even prayers would mean the world to our family. Our dad has nine grandchildren that are his absolute world.
