Our loving recuse dog Layla's hospital bill
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Mikey and I am fundraising for our rescue dog's unexpected and untimely hospital bill.
In June of 2020, my partner Marissa brought home a beautiful border collie black lab mix named Layla. As a rescue that had a tumultuous past, Layla was not too keen on me at first. I did not take it personally; she did not trust any men. However it did not take long for her to warm up to me, and now I am known as her "Mans". She perks up whenever Marissa says the word Mans and looks to the door in anticipation of her favorite male face to kiss. Layla loves her Mans and I am her secondary caretaker.
I woke up in a shock last Saturday morning, March 2nd 2024. Marissa had texted me and called me several times. She said something bad happened to Layla and to call her as soon as possible. When I called me she told me that Layla was able to unscrew a childproof bottle of iron supplements and was now at the veterinary hospital. Marissa has had bottles of this type out in the open and Layla never touched them in the past 4 years, so I was completely bewildered. Marissa told me this was a potentially lethal dose. We spend the whole day together worryingly waiting until we received a phone call around 3 PM. Layla was okay but was not taking her meds, so we rushed over as quickly as possible. It was such a relief to see our baby, and with a bit of effort we fed her activated charcoal. Thankfully, Layla was okay and we took her home. In a follow up visit her lab results looked great so the damage was minimal. The charcoal made a bit of a mess though...
Marissa takes all financial responsibility for Layla. As an early career scientist, the hospital bill of more than $2500 is a huge hit to her financial stability. Marissa will be moving in a month, and is paying back student loans. I have donated what I can, but on a modest graduate student stipend I am struggling to make ends meet myself.
We are extremely grateful that our baby toughed it out and is home safe. Any donation will make a difference. Thank you for your time. Please enjoy one of my favorite pictures of Layla loving on her Mans for reading until the end.
