Our Superhero Mickey

Donation protected
On December 31, 2018 Michaela (Mickey), her Aunt Becca, her cousin Sophia, and our friend Challen, were visiting a horse at our friend's barn in Santa Fe. Right after arriving Michaela, Sophia and Becca were walking in front of the horse as he was being led to the round pen to give him a little exercise. Some ice that was on the roof of a barn nearby fell off the roof and spooked the horse. He swung around and hit Mickey with the broad side of his rear-end, throwing her into the frozen, packed ground.  At the hospital it was determined that Mickey would need emergency surgery because she had sustained 2 skull fractures and was bleeding in 3 places in her brain.

By a miraculous circumstance Dr. Shields, a neurosurgeon at St Vincent's, who was not on call, was in the emergency room tending one of this patients, and heard about Michaela. He made the decision that he would need to operate on Michaela at St. Vincent's hospital. This felt scary because they do not have a pediatric ICU, but Dr. Shields explained that it was absolutely necessary to do the surgery right away to prevent any additional swelling, and pressure on her brain stem. Because of a winter storm all life flight helicopters and fixed wing planes had been grounded, meaning no quick way to UNM. Before her Mom could even get there, they wheeled her in for the emergency craniotomy.

2-hours later she came out of surgery, and the amazing team from AirMethods Care Flight in Santa Fe agreed to be in the ambulance to transport her via ground transport to Albuquerque. Santa Fe City Fire department and one of their best paramedics and firefighters drove through a literal blizzard, and even set-up a police escort from Santa Fe Sheriffs department. It took us 90 minutes to transport her from Santa Fe to Albuquerque to the pediatric ICU at UNM.

Mickey is making miraculous strides on her road to recovery, but she has a long road ahead in terms of therapies to get her back to 100%. 10 days in the hospital and ICU, transports and surgery, all add up. The financial portion of this will be great for her parents especially with 4 other kiddos at home as well. Any help you can offer will be SO appreciated, as the medical bills have already started to come in.

MUCH LOVE-Mickey and Family
