“Nick’s your buddy. Nick’s the kind of guy you can trust, the kind of guy you can drink beer with, the kind of guy who doesn’t mind if you puke in his car. Nick!” - Walter ”Gib” Gibson (John Cusack) from THE SURE THING
NICK HRYCAJ is the kind of guy you can trust, a buddy, a kind of guy you can drink beer (or Fireballs) with, and I’m sure some of you might’ve puked in his car and he didn’t mind. He is this and much more to many of his friends and family members. Throughout his 41 years on this planet he has been a brother, son, cousin, nephew, friend, best friend, coach, coworker, ball player, good time guy, a good listener, roommate, golfer, and I’m sure many other things to many people in his life. One thing he isn’t happy about being is someone with cancer.
Nick was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer September 19, 2014 after a softball sized mass was found in his abdominal area. He's had many different types of treatments and besides the time off from his initial diagnosis, Nick made it a point to live his life and not be “someone with cancer” or let cancer define him. He continued to work, play and coach baseball/softball, golf, hang out with friends, go on cruises, weddings, and other crazy excursions. Nick’s cancer treatments seemed to be working the first 18 months after diagnosis , but then the cancer began to spread. First to his lungs, then back to his abdominal area and finally to his brain. The brain lesion has led to seizures and other health issues. Nick was living life when his first seizures happened, on a boat over Memorial Weekend 2019. The brain lesion and seizures began at a time when Nick was running out of options for workable cancer treatments and these complications add to the difficulty to continue treatment. Nick discussed with his cancer doctor about what to do when treatments were no longer working. We are at that point now where Nick is no longer receiving cancer treatments and is now living with his Dad (Steve Hrycaj) in Inverness, Florida with assistance from his sister (Lara Hrycaj) and Vistas Hospice.
While in Inverness, his dad and sister are trying to make him as comfortable as possible. The one joy he still has is eating and he eats A LOT (this is due to the medicine he is on). This means going to the store almost every other day and the cost is more than what Steve and Lara can handle. Steve is retired on a limited income and Lara’s income is limited since she is not working in Michigan as she is down in Florida to help with Nick’s care. In addition to groceries, there are some meds not covered by hospice and other expenses that come with Nick’s care.
Nick and his family are proud and do not like being in a position to ask for any funds but they need your help. This Go-Fund-Me is to help Nick and his caretakers to make his final time as comfortable as possible and that he gets everything he needs. These funds will help with groceries, meds and other expenses needed for Nick’s care. Thanks for loving and caring for Nick while he has been your trusted buddy, coach, cousin, best friend, drinking pal, nephew, co-worker, and all around great guy. Thanks for any contribution you make and being an important part of Nick’s life.
