Over the River Farm Fundraiser

Donation protected

The 100-year flood. You say it. You think about it. But you’re never really prepared for it. On August 17, Hurricane Fred swept through Western North Carolina dumping up to 10” of rain throughout the region. Candler, NC experienced some of the worst flooding from the storm with Hominy Creek raising almost 12 feet over the normal river level (per the USGS gauge located near West Asheville). Along this creek is Over the River Farm, owned and operated by Julia and Scott Collins. It’s a quaint farm that is a special home for its horses and riders, many of them being Julia’s students from their early childhood into their adult life.

With Hurricane Fred came the 100-year flood that devasted the farm. With the surge caused by a flash flood rising well over the riverbanks, the farm & the living quarters were 4’ underwater. The ring is gone. The pastures are gone. Sediment left behind from the receeding river sinks 10" deep. The horses were up to their knees in silt and water. The bunk house damaged with water seeping in and leaving behind inches of mud. The damage is tragically devasting. The farm team worked throughout the night and was able to evacuate all 11 horses and relocate them to safe, temporary stalls where they've been receiving extra TLC and seem to be doing just fine.

Julia and Scott have poured their heart and souls into the farm, spending decades giving riders and horses alike newfound confidence and skills that will last them a lifetime. In the aftermath of this devastating flood, we are hoping to raise enough money to help sustain the horses in their temporary home until we can find a more long-term solution. With that, we are hoping for donations to help buy hay, grain, and bedding and any other care needs that arise with all extra donations going directly to Julia and Scott for farm repairs, temporary housing, and any additional expenses that need to be covered along them way.

Please help us show Julia and Scott the generosity and kindness they have bestowed upon their community by donating, as anything will help pave the way to the next steps.
