Overtoun Park Rutherglen bandstand refurbishment

Donation protected

Hi there thank you for clicking on our cause our ambition is to have an iconic bandstand completely refurbished repaired and brought back to its glory,

Over the years the local community have tried in vain to have the bandstand restored by the local council, with the costs being so high all they got done was a coat of black paint that now has even fallen off revealing the true beauty underneath, with its beautiful blue and gold iconic colours showing through this historic iconic beautiful structure deserves to no longer be left to ruin but be fully restored to its former glory

our aim is to have the bandstand fully refurbished and looking as it did when it was new,

the park that this bandstand is located is Overtoun Park in Rutherglen Glasgow,

many generations of families have and still do frequently visit this park, the park is connected to an old folks home and these elderly and disabled people often go on short trips to the park and have memories of the bandstand in all its glory from days goneby, now they are left disheartened with the current state of ruin the bandstand has fallen into.

for me I think with the past year the elderly have had to cope with, the loneliness and the lack of contact from family and friends we would love to bring this bandstand back to its glory for them and generations still to come.

on top of this for the unveiling of the refurbished bandstand we would love to arrange an orchestral performance at the bandstand for the people in the old folks home, we would also like to host a weekend free event for the community and surrounding areas with performances from local talented musicians, performers, and artists from all genre of art and entertainment to bring back some much needed joy and also publicity for the artists who have also had their careers near ended by the recent pandemic, this event we would like to be free entry to everyone and with any funds remaining after the repair of the bandstand we would like to use to help fund the weekend gathering event.

As you can see from the below response from the council this is going to be an uphill struggle but I believe together we can achieve our goals.

I have received an estimate back from our colleagues in Housing Services to undertake repair work to the bandstand.  This is based on previous estimates undertaken last year and doesn’t include the additional seating work that was shown in your plan, as well as any issues they may find when they undertake a more detailed survey of the bandstand.  It will give you an idea of the kind of money that we are looking at and something that the group can discuss, it would include the following.

1)     Strip and renew roof covering.

2)     Strip and replace sarking materials.

3)     Cut out and replace all rot to roof timbers.

4)     Paint removal to all structural and decorative ironwork.

5)     Repair and recreation to ironworks as required.

6)     Redecoration to ironworks

7)     New ceiling timber to roof.

8)     Decoration to new ceiling.

9)     Uplift and renew masonry finished to base.

10)  Minor paving elements to base.

Estimate to undertake all of the above would be in the region of £175K, any additional work would obviously increase this cost.  As I pointed out on site we don’t have any resources that could be attributed to these repairs so the monies would need to be sought from external funders.  I am off from this Friday for 2 weeks but if the group want to discuss this and then come back to me if you would still like to pursue this I can then start to look at the funding that you may be able to tap into.
