Help Lay Owen Wood To Rest- A Local Hero's Farewel

Donation protected

Hello,

With a heavy heart and profound grief, I share the heartbreaking story of my son, Owen Wood, who unexpectedly left us on December 12th at the tender age of 24, succumbing to a sudden cardiac arrest on the streets of downtown Calgary, Alberta. The tragedy unfolded as he lay unattended for more than 30 minutes, robbed of everything on his person, including his wallet, valuables, and his return ticket, leaving us with the heartbreaking reality of his untimely death.

Owen was a remarkable soul who was unwavering in his commitment to helping others. He was a beacon of compassion, giving without reservation and often going above and beyond to help those in need. Despite facing personal challenges, he spent his free time working tirelessly to uplift the community with everything he had. Owen's acts of kindness ranged from providing warm clothing (at times even giving the clothes off his own back and shoes on his own feet), making food to give to the homeless during harsh winter months to actively assisting single mothers and defending the elderly from harm.

Owen was on a journey to become a mechanic at SAIT in his pursuit of a meaningful life, fueled by a desire to make a positive impact on the world. Unexpected expenses, such as hotels and funeral costs, have left me, his bereaved mother, unable to cover even the most basic cremation costs, as I am on a low income alone. Owen's bank account was empty due to continually helping those around him, and he had no assets to his name, adding to an already difficult financial situation.

Our family is left with few options because Owen was ineligible for Canadian Death Benefits or student loans in Alberta due to his age and origin from Ontario, and we lack legal documentation for Alberta assistance. The approaching time limit only adds to the urgency of our situation.

Owen's selflessness extended far beyond the ordinary. Despite his financial difficulties, he consistently reached out to help others, providing warmth and comfort to those in need. His acts of kindness were more than just gestures; they were a way of life. As a single mother in my hour of greatest need, I am unable to give him the dignified farewell he deserves.

I humbly request assistance from our community, the very community he loved so much. Your contribution, no matter how small, will help give Owen the peaceful rest he deserves while also relieving the financial strain on our small bereaved family. Please consider assisting us in burying Owen, honouring the memory of a young man who touched countless lives with his kindness and compassion in his brief time with us.

With heartfelt appreciation,

Sheri Wood
