Help Owen get his "Robot Leg"!

Donation protected
This is my 5-year-old nephew, Owen. Owen is emotional, funny, kind, sensitive and brave. He loves hot wheels, dinosaurs, monster trucks, singing to “watermelon sugar”, and his family. But mostly his family.

Owen was born with a severely bowed left leg that is thin and lacking density. Because of this, Owen has worn a leg brace 24/7 from 6 months on, to try and prevent the bone from snapping.  Despite our best efforts to be careful and support his leg, Owen endured a spontaneous break of his leg when he was 11 months old which shattered the bone surrounding the break and weakened his leg further.

Shortly after his 1st birthday, Owen  had invasive surgery to put a rod and pins  in his leg in hopes of supporting the bone, promoting proper healing and preventing another break.

Four years later, regardless of our efforts, Doctors have determined that the rod is not properly supporting his leg and that an amputation of Owen’s foot and lower leg is necessary to provide him with the best chance at a quality life.

Owen has never run. He has never jumped or played sports, and roughhousing with his little brother is strongly discouraged because of how fragile his leg is. Walking any distance causes him pain as his hips and back get sore from the weight of his brace and the change in his gait. Sometimes it gets so sore, he cannot walk.  His brace often rubs the skin on his leg and foot raw, and he is at constant risk of a skin infection. Since Owen received his brace at 6 months old, he has never gone a day without pain of some sort.

All we’ve ever wanted for Owen is to have a world without limitation, where he could do and be anything he wanted. This surgery gives Owen the best chance at a life full of adventure and opportunity, and hopefully eliminates some, if not all of his pain. It’s been a very long road and this is a tough decision, but we have faith this is the best option for him.

However, this surgery also comes with many expenses, a two-week hospital stay for Owen, and an uphill recovery requiring a lot of time and dedication.  Health care and insurance only partially cover the costs and the expenses are staggering, not only for the operation and recovery period, but even moving forward as Owen continues to grow and requires additional support, new prosthetics etc.

I’m asking for help with some of the expenses that will come with this type of recovery so my sister and her husband can focus their attention on their family during this tough time, instead of worrying about financial problems. If you can donate to Owen and his journey, it would be greatly appreciated.
