A Celebration of Young People’s Creativity!

Now in our 34th year...Oxford Youth Dance believes that dance is for everybody and continues to celebrate young people’s individuality, creativity and love of dance. It works in an inclusive, non-competitive environment and fees are kept at the lowest possible level.

We are raising money to support our annual performance at Pegasus Theatre, Oxford on March 28th 2020. This year the theme will be Extinction with links to the youth climate movement and Extinction Rebellion for which many of our dancers have been proud activists since 2019. Theatre costs can be expensive and as OYD's class fees are kept as low as possible, this year we will be doing a number of fundraising activities as we need a little extra help to make our show as meaningful and creative as we can! Any extra that we make (via fundraising and ticket and programme sales) will go towards the UK Youth Climate Coalition and Friends of the Earth.

We also hope to do some busking/pop-up performances in Oxford City Centre and make links where possible with Dancin' Oxford Festival and other local community groups as well as the local youth climate movement and XR chapters.
In November 2019, Slipstream youth dance group (for dancers aged 11-14 years) previewed an exciting new piece commissioned by Oxford University's Museum of Natural History, in and around the Museum's exhibits and dinosaur fossils. This piece, based around the museum's First Animals exhibit about the Cambrian Explosion will also feature in our 'Extinction Stinks!' showcase and we may well look for further fundraising opportunities at the museum after such a warm welcome last year...watch this space!

OYD's History:

OYD was started in 1986 by Cecilia Macfarlane. Cecilia Macfarlane, an independent dance artist, internationally renowned for her work in intergenerational and community dance, started Oxford Youth Dance (OYD) in 1986. OYD is non-auditioned and is open to any young dancer. It began as Bloomin Arts (now Fusion) for children aged 5-9. The classes proved popular and increased in number quickly. In 1991 the organization, inspired by Oxford Youth Theatre at Pegasus Theatre, was renamed Oxford Youth Dance.

Performance is an integral part of the work and there have been performances at Pegasus Theatre going back over 25 years as well as sell-out performances at the Oxford Playhouse, the Old Fire Station and a number of site-specific locations and festivals.
All dancers have the opportunity to create and perform their own work, with direction by professional Oxford-based Dance artists. This year we hope that the event will have a special poignancy as we work artistically to support the ever growing youth climate movement spearheaded by Greta Thunberg.

We are thrilled to be returning to Pegasus Theatre after four years with OYD now under the direction of Elly Crowther, who proudly took over in 2018, when Cecilia handed over the longstanding Saturday classes to her. Elly is extremely excited to start building and shaping ideas with all the young dancers and their families with a theme that she is truly passionate about.
We will also  hope to welcome guest performances from our sister companies: DugOut Adult Community Dance and Oxford Youth Dance Company, along with other guest artists.

Thanks in advance must go to the wonderful Ark-T Centre for  their continued ongoing support of OYD through providing rehearsal space each week, the wonderful Waste2Taste Cafe, artist support and performance spaces.

For more info about Oxford Youth Dance please get in touch and don't forget your tickets to the show, on sale soon!
Thank you so much for your support,
Elly and the OYD team!
