Tanzania Community Work

My name is Poppy Brown

 

In 2023 a small group of students and I will be travelling to Tanzania for four weeks, with an organisation called Camps International. This life changing and life enhancing expedition will include community work, improving the infrastructure of rural villages, and making a positive impact to the surrounding environment whilst living alongside the communities in camps, working hand in hand with local people, learning traditional skills along the way and learning about challenges they face, and working to find solutions.

 

The core objectives of this expedition are to undertake projects in order to:

- Raise the educational standards of developing communities within a rural district of Tanzania

- Raise the living standards of developing communities, within a rural district of Tanzania, for example, building classrooms, refurbishing community buildings, and installing water storage systems.

- Assist with ongoing wildlife conservation programs to preserve biodiversity and protect vulnerable habitats, involving work such as tackling issues of deforestation, tree planting, digging water holes

 

We will also be undertaking a strenuous and character building personal challenge, which is a 5 day trek up the 14,980ft (4,566m) Mount Meru. We will be trekking and camping through tropical rainforest to the summit.

 

Part of the whole experience is fundraising for our passage. I need to personally raise £5000 to cover trip, accommodation, food, kit, contributing to the community development work and conservation activities.

 

As I am not the sort of person to ask for something for nothing, and as part of the personal development element, I will be creating items to sell, events to run, and putting myself through physically challenging sponsored activities. 

 

I am very excited about this trip as I would gain a huge amount from it. The fundraising is all part of the experience, although it will be hard I am focussed on the challenge.

 

I look forward to keeping in touch, updating people with my fundraising progress and encouraging you to look at what I’m doing to raise funds and hopefully find something that would make you feel like you would like to support and contribute to my fundraising efforts.

 

My first challenge is underway already as I am learning Swahili with the help of Duolingo!!
