Valeria's Kidney Transplant Recovery Fund

I'm Antonio, the one on the right. I’m a 35-year-old, Peruvian, brother, husband, and father, and today I want to share with you the delicate case of my dear sister Valeria.

Valeria, the one on the left, is 25 years old. She is brave, happy, determined, full of ideas, and willing to fight every day to achieve her dreams. She is the last of 5 siblings, I’ve loved, cared for, and protected her since she came into our family.

In 2009, when Valeria was just 11 years old, after extensive tests she was diagnosed with LUPUS, an autoimmune disease. It was quite difficult for us as a family to pretend to understand what was to come, but even more so for her, who as a child had to learn to deal with her illness and endure painful treatments, hoping one day to heal and live a better future.

After much effort, she managed to emigrate with our mother to Boston-MA in 2013, with great expectations of finding better treatment and better quality of life. This is how the years passed, with ups and downs, even so, she remained strong in the face of her illness; she finished High School with merit, started working and attending College, and even visited me in Lima-Peru, in 2017, for my wedding. I was very happy to see that the little girl had become a radiant woman, optimistic and living the life she always wanted to live.

Unfortunately, the disease tried to wipe out her smile. On December 28th, 2019, during her last visit to Peru, she had a critical episode that caused a general collapse of her body. Lupus had attacked her kidneys, bringing her to the brink of death and the ICU for weeks. Stronger than her illness, she fought and survived. After being discharged, she underwent dialysis treatment, which occurred in the most difficult context ever thought: During the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the passing of the months, dialysis began to severely affect her health. There were great changes, her appearance became opaque, and she lost muscle mass and mobility, but her smile and her joy for living remained. This is how Valeria spent the first year of dialysis in Lima-Peru, receiving a lot of support from the whole family, sharing great moments, and enjoying every day from start to finish. On March 8th, 2021, a great sadness invaded us, our father, had passed away due to complications from COVID-19.

Valeria, once again, was strong. She collected her regrets, packed up her dreams, and made a decision full of illusions. On April 2021, she returned to Boston-MA with our mother, to continue her treatment, while waiting for the desired transplant to be given as soon as possible. So, given her evident and delicate state of health, I offered my kidney for donation to my sister. Coordination with the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center - BIDMC began in August 2022 and in November of the same year, I traveled to Boston-MA to undergo rigorous medical evaluations.

Given the high compatibility and my favorable state of health, I was accepted as a donor on January 4th and the intervention was scheduled for May 16th of this year. 3 years and 4 months of dialysis and after a successful transplant Valeria got herself a new kidney. This new organ will allow her to continue the hard and long battle against LUPUS and give her new opportunities to continue fighting to fulfill her dreams.

Currently, my sister is in the process of recovery and adaptation to the transplant. This rigorous 2-year stage is of vital importance to keep the organ stable and improve her health and quality of life. The appointments and monitoring are carried out in coordination with the valuable medical team of the BIDMC, while all the care and attention are being carried out among ourselves, with the immense love of my mother Lucia, and the loyal support of my brother Diego.

We have faced these 14 years of hard and costly battles together as a family, each one of us has fulfilled a role and even many relatives, friends and colleagues have offered us their support. But it is at this moment that we need even more help, so I ask you to please help me carry out this GoFundMe to cover Valeria's needs and alleviate her medical care expenses such as medicines, physical therapy, rent, food, transportation, and others.

Soy Antonio, el de la derecha. Tengo 35 años, soy peruano, hermano, esposo y padre, y hoy deseo compartir con ustedes el delicado caso de mi querida hermana Valeria.

Valeria, la de la izquierda, tiene 25 años, es valiente, alegre, decidida, llena de ocurrencias y dispuesta a luchar cada día por alcanzar sus sueños. Es la última de 5 hermanos, a quien quiero, cuido y protejo desde que llegó a nuestra familia.

En el año 2009, cuando Valeria tenía apenas 11 años, tras extensos análisis fue diagnosticada de una enfermedad autoinmune: LUPUS. Bastante difícil fue para nosotros como familia pretender entender lo que estaba por llegar, pero más aún para ella, que siendo una niña, tuvo que aprender a lidiar con su enfermedad y sobrellevar los dolorosos tratamientos, esperando algún día sanar y vivir un futuro mejor.

Tras mucho esfuerzo, logró emigrar junto a nuestra madre a Boston-MA en 2013, con grandes expectativas de encontrar un mejor tratamiento y una mejor calidad de vida. Pasaron los años, con altos y bajos, aun así se mantuvo fuerte ante su enfermedad; concluyó el High School con mérito, empezó a trabajar y asistir al College, e incluso me visitó en Lima-Perú, en el 2017, para mi boda. Yo estaba muy feliz, de ver que aquella pequeña niña se convertía en una mujer radiante, llena de optimismo y viviendo la vida plena que siempre deseó.

Lamentablemente, la enfermedad intentó borrar su sonrisa; el 28 de diciembre del 2019, durante su última visita a Perú, tuvo un episodio crítico que generó un colapso general de su organismo. El LUPUS había atacado sus riñones, llevándola al borde de la muerte y a estar internadad en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos durante semanas. Valeria fue más fuerte que su enfermedad, luchó y sobrevivió. Tras ser dada de alta, siguió un tratamiento de diálisis, el cual se dio en el contexto más difícil jamás pensado: la pandemia por el COVID-19.

Con el pasar de los meses, la diálisis comenzó a afectar severamente su salud, hubo grandes cambios, su aspecto se opacó, perdió masa muscular y movilidad; pero su sonrisa y su alegría por vivir se mantuvieron. Valeria transcurrió así el primer año de diálisis en Lima-Perú, recibiendo mucho apoyo de parte de toda la familia, compartiendo grandes momentos y disfrutando cada día de principio a fin. Hasta que en marzo del 2021 una gran tristeza nos invadió, nuestro padre, producto del COVID-19, falleció.

Valeria, una vez más, fue fuerte. Recogió sus lamentos, empacó sus sueños y tomó una decisión llena de ilusiones: en abril del 2021, volvió a Boston-MA junto a nuestra madre, para continuar su tratamiento a la espera de que el trasplante deseado se dé lo más pronto posible. Entonces, ante su evidente y delicado estado de salud, decidí voluntariamente ofrecerme como donante de riñón. Las coordinaciones con el Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center - BIDMC iniciaron en agosto del 2022 y en noviembre del mismo año viajé a Boston-MA para someterme a una rigurosa evaluación médica.

Dada la alta compatibilidad y mi favorable estado de salud, fui aceptado el 4 de enero como donante y se programó la intervención para el 16 de mayo del presente año. Así, tras una cirugía exitosa, después de más de 3 años y 4 meses, Valeria obtuvo un nuevo riñón. Este nuevo órgano no sólo le permitirá continuar la dura y larga batalla contra el LUPUS, sino que también le brinda una nueva oportunidad para seguir luchando por cumplir sus sueños.

Actualmente, mi hermana se encuentra en el proceso de recuperación y adaptación del trasplante. Esta rigurosa etapa de 2 años es de vital importancia para mantener el órgano estable y mejorar su salud y calidad de vida. Las citas y monitoreos se realizan en coordinación con el valioso equipo médico del BIDMC, mientras que todos los cuidados y atenciones las estamos realizando entre nosotros, contando con el inmenso amor de mi madre Lucia y el leal apoyo de mi hermano Diego.

Estos 14 años, de dura y costosa batalla, los hemos afrontado juntos como familia, cada uno de nosotros ha cumplido su rol e incluso muchos parientes, amigos y colegas nos han brindado su apoyo. Pero es en este momento que necesitamos aún más ayuda, por eso les pido que por favor me ayuden a realizar esta colecta con el fin de cubrir las necesidades de Valeria y aliviar los gastos médicos en medicamentos, terapia física, renta, alimentación, transporte y otros.
