"First time I learned about autism was when my twins Mykolas and Gabrielius were 2.5 year old. It sounded like a life sentence: "Your kids have autism, and you should think about your own future. take them to some lunatic asylum and leave them there. they are useless, they will never be normal!" ... for half a year I was learning to live with the diagnosis, I was studying and observing them... It was hard to grasp why these two active, lively, cute babies who had tried to learn to talk, couldn't manage these other wise easy tasks for healthy normal developing children. It seemed like their entire childhood with hopes and dreams collapsed into the dark abyss. Autism seemed like a thief to me, who stole my kids and my peace of mind..
"If you had known before they were born, you could have had an abortion .... ", "Kids like that shouldn't be alive" - these thoughts were vocalized by my closest people ........ ( taken from Audrone's letter)
Twins Mykolas and Gabrielius will turn 6 in November. They were both diagnosed with low functioning autism, impaired social communications and interactions, lack of social and emotional reciprocity. they also have hemianesthesia from their waist down (thus hurting themselves without feeling it and having to use diapers all the time). Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a group of complex neurodevelopment disorders characterized by repetitive and characteristic patterns of behavior and difficulties with social communication and interaction. The symptoms are present from early childhood and affect daily functioning. Twins need 24/7 care. They need help with developing their emotional and social skills so that they could function in the society. Twin's mother Audrone since their diagnosis has been trying to find that special care for them, any sort of help .. Unfortunately Lithuania is still very primitive and doesn't provide any help for people with mental illnesses, parents are left to face their problems alone. "I slowly became a mother of mental retards who were not welcome anywhere- including day care centers and special needs centers." People staring and insulting her made it really difficult for Audrone to move forward. Today Audrone with her twins live in Klaipeda (3rd biggest town in Lithuania). She doesn't complain or cry.... She says all the tears are cried out during her sleepless nights.. She doesn't "live" anymore, she just exists and does what any mother would do.. what's best for her children.
But she has a DREAM. a dream that would help her find a special care for her twins, care that they deserve, and that she could go to work and be human again. her dream is to move to the United Kingdom, where people CARE, where special needs are being taken care of, where "different" people are considered a part of the society and integrated , and respected. Maybe they will never be "normal", but they can learn how to adapt and adjust. And Audrone will be able to buy good quality food, vitamins and supplements which are crucial for special needs kids. "It seems like in Lithuania I don't have any hope to live with dignity and respect that we all need... and to do what every mother wants to do- raise her kids the best way she can, be worthy and not condemned by her own country"....
Please , we ask everyone of you, help this young beautiful mother reach her goal, chase her dream! She has a strong plan, detailed information regarding emigration to the U.K. all she needs is to take care of paperwork and 7000 Euros to pay for insurance, move, rent , etc. Audrone is not afraid of work, she will be happy to get any job for herself as long as her children get the care they deserve.
Thank You
Sincerely,
