Pails for scales conservation!

Based in Ballarat, Victoria- Australia,. Roy Pails was one of the largest breeders of reptiles in Australia. Roy is now focusing his time on Australian Conservation, with a slice of heaven just outside of Ballarat. which he calls the Sunset Sanctuary which is now fox and cat proof, which now has lots of endangered wildlife living and breeding. Pails for scales Conservation has 5 sanctuary's on 3 states of Australia totalling 8500 acres in size.

THE FIGHT TO SAVE SUNSET SANCTUARY

Before I started to cat and fox proof the sanctuary to rewild it with vulnerable and endangered wildlife (over five years ago), I checked with DELWP, an ok to go ahead was given as long as the wildlife were from sanctuaries or private keepers who have free range enclosures.

So, I went about obtaining wildlife – bandicoots, potaroos, bettongs, pademelons and wallabies all from sanctuaries and private keepers (all with large free rang enclosures, as required).

After I’d finished the fence and started to rewild the area, a rep from Zoos Vic came to visit and thought it was a great idea and maybe a possibility to link together to rewild Bushfire affected areas.

Now three years on, DELWP have cancelled my license as I cannot keep an accurate count of the animals (which is law in Vic) this is impossible with our rewilded area. I have been given two options

1. Cage all the animals which would stress them out and they would die, which I don’t want to do

2. Establish management plans, flora and fauna assessments, biodiversity, and ecological systems and more.

Obviously, OPTION 2 is my choice!

Many have asked and now we are reaching out and asking for your help – OPTION 2 (SAVE THE SANCTUARY)

* Development of funding and management plans - Fire, water/drought, sustainability

* Animal – species (bandicoots, potaroos and bettongs, pademelons and wallabies), population, and habitat suitability

* Flora and fauna assessments

* Species conservation, Biodiversity values and ecosystem function

To date we have funded this ourselves but am unsure how much additional costs this will entail – environmental consultants, ecologists, even maybe solicitors.
