Painting for Palestine - Belfast
In August 2023 l, Rana Hammoudeh got in contact from Ramallah. She had recently been in Belfast and had been impressed by the International Wall in Divis Street, a long set of political murals, some of which relate to struggles in places like Palestine and Cuba. Her idea was to paint an international wall in Palestine, with Irish and Palestinian artists working together. Although the Belfast muralists I spoke to were interested there were various reasons why they would never make it to Palestine.
That’s when Danny Devenny came up with a great suggestion: that they send images to Palestine that artists there could then reproduce on the walls. Rana loved this idea, as did a number of Palestinian artists she spoke to.
Then October 7th happened and the Hamas incursion into pre48 Palestine. The brutal and sustained bombardment of Gaza by Israeli forces followed and painting murals dropped down the agenda.
Danny D came to the rescue again: why not have Palestinian artists send over images that could be painted on the International Wall in Belfast? Rana responded quickly and the process of Painting for Palestine began.
The idea is to remove many if not all the murals currently on the wall and replace them with images sent from Palestine.
Funds are needed to purchase paint and other materials for the murals, any additional funds will go to Palestine.
