As someone living in North America and constantly watching the current circumstances in Palestine escalate, it's hard not to feel helpless. I'm losing sleep at night knowing that another child has been killed, another father has lost a whole family, another shop owner has lost everything they worked hard for. It's hard knowing you can have the luxury of being comfortable in your home while the people of Palestine are struggling each day, they're losing their homes, they're facing more injustice than ever, they are living by the minute because tomorrow may not come around. It's a struggle waking up and living "normally" while generations are being wiped out, families are being separated, weddings are turning into funerals, playgrounds are looking more like battlefields. The pictures, the videos, the stories, the immense grief- this is REAL.
This could be our children, our grandparents, our lives being burned to ashes. Palestine and it's people didn't choose this for themselves, they had dreams and hopes of living like US, like normal people. They're human and deserve to be treated and recognized like humans. We don't have the same barriers and obstacles as them, we can look away, turn off our phones and go on with our day- but why would we? We are their support, their light at the end of the tunnel, their voice, their hope. Aside from raising awareness about the injustice, how can we help with what we have so that we CAN go to bed feeling a bit lighter at night.
This fundraiser has been set up in support of the Palestine Emergency Appeal by Islamic Relief Canada. In Gaza, the Islamic Relief team works extensively, providing vital medical supplies, sponsoring orphans, distributing food packs, and personal protective equipment to ensure the safety of the healthcare workers.
Note: This fundraiser will run until June 5th, 2021. My partner Tahsin Farooq and I will match up to $1,000 CAD for every dollar contributed to this fundraiser. Proof of donation will be posted after the donation has been made to Islamic Relief Canada.
