Paper Chained Operating Costs

Paper Chained is a journal of writings and artistic expressions from people affected by incarceration. The first issue was released in 2017 and was funded entirely by an individual dedicated to the cause, as was the latest 2021 issue, and all labour required to produce the journal is contributed voluntarily. We're calling on the community to support the sustainability of this initiative by contributing to the basic running costs for the 2022 issue.

These journals offer a space for people affected by prison to share their creative voices and their stories. We are now distributing the journal to over 50 people in prisons in Australia, New Zealand and the United States, and we receive new subscriptions to the journal regularly. We have also started a pen-pal program through the journal, providing a further platform to break the isolation of prison.

Each journal costs $5-$6 to print, and $2.35-$8.45 to post depending on destination (50 journals printed and distributed domestically would cost over $350, for example). There are also costs associated with maintaining a PO Box and maintaining the pen-pal program The costs add up very quickly and are likely to continue growing.

This journal is an autonomous publication. Any funds raised in excess of the costs for this year will be used for future publications or passed on to a similar organisation.
