About Parents For Joy
It started out as a simple idea—a place where parents could bring their children with special needs to play without having to worry about their safety, a place where the children would feel welcomed and included. The idea soon grew into what is now Parents For Joy, a community project sponsored by Parents Helping Parents, dedicated to building a one-of-a-kind, community sponsored playground—a place that stimulates imagination, promotes acceptance, and is fully accessible and all-inclusive for our children, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities.
Parents For Joy is entirely comprised of volunteers, therefore 100% of all fundraising dollars go directly towards making this dream into a reality. Since the project started in May 2013, we have received nothing but support from our community. The City of Atascadero has graciously donated an area in Colony Park for us to build our playground, approved the design plan and issued the appropriate permits to get the project going.
The Playground
The City of Atascadero has graciously donated a plot of land for our project, and the playground will be centrally located within the Colony Park facilities of Atascadero.
The main feature of JOY Playground will be an accessible treehouse with slides and panels to play with. There will be both steps and double-wide ramps leading up to the treehouse so that all can “climb” up into the tree and no one is left out. They can feel what it’s like to be high up in a tree, but still be very safe. Other features include a Rock N Raft (seats 6 including a wheelchair) that gently rocks back and forth, a Merry Go All with space for up to 12 including 4 seats with seat belts for safety, several slides including a few made of stainless steel for children with cochlear implants, several swings with additional safety features, and so much more. This playground has been meticulously designed and even the ground was chosen with a purpose.
