Personal Assistance Resource Center
Donation protected
The Personal Assistance Resource Center is raising start-up funds to become a certified 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to support home care workers and consumers by providing information and referrals, training, peer support, conflict resolution and advocacy.
For people with disabilities who rely on personal assistance for their daily living activities, home care workers are the cornerstone of their independence. Without someone to help them with daily living activities, all the hard won access laws are irrelevant. With an expanded workforce of qualified Personal Assistants, the Independent Living Movement can thrive and people with disabilities can continue to make strides toward full inclusion in our society.
The PARC will actively recruit job seekers to the rapidly growing field of home care, providing detailed information on employment options, such as the government subsidized In Home Support Services (IHSS) program, home health agencies, and private pay arrangements. We will refer prospective workers to existing resources for finding clients, rather than replicate registry services currently available. In addition to referrals to existing training programs, the PARC will offer workshops focusing on communication and the consumer directed model of home care services. Training for consumers in attendant management will also be offered.
The PARC will provide facilitator training to attendants wanting to convene support groups such as Caring for your Parents, or Working for people with Dementia. In addition, we will train counselors in conflict mediation with an emphasis on the caregiver/client dynamic. The goal is to increase the pool of qualified workers to fill the growing need for home care workers, and to improve their job satisfaction by providing supports necessary to succeed.
The funds raised by this campaign will be used to pay rent for office, classroom and meeting space; funds to pay consultants for accounting, grant writing, and technical support; training for board members, support group facilitators, and mediators; and stipends for facilitators and mediators. In addition to cash, I am also welcoming in-kind donations of tech support, translation, design services, printing, advertising, a new computer, business consulting, and research assistance.
This project has been a dream of mine for over twenty years. Your contribution of $10, $100, or $1000 is greatly appreciated. The sooner I can raise these start-up costs, the sooner I can apply for big money grants and make the PARC a sustainable resource for the disability community and home care workers in the Bay Area!
