Eviction Defence Fund for the Park Beach Tenants Collective

Donation protected
Since April, tenants living at Park Beach Manor have been under attack from their landlord, Plan A Real Estate Services. Many would consider Plan A to be Vancouver’s worst landlord. The company and its managing broker, Anoop Majithia, have a decade-long history of abusing tenants and breaking the law. Threats, harassment, surveillance, and ultimately eviction are commonplace Plan A tactics. Majithia’s goal is to evict long standing tenants so he can jack up the rent, or turn people’s homes into lucrative AirBnBs.

Our Park Beach neighbours need our help to stay in their homes.

Plan A has deep pockets to pay lawyers to continually harass our neighbours, and Majithia has no problem dragging tenants through the Residential Tenancy Branch and the courts. Numerous long term tenants are facing the threat of imminent eviction while others are challenging poor RTB decisions in the courts. This has to stop.

Park Beach is my home and we had no problems here before Plan A took over. As soon as Plan A took over the building we started getting threats of eviction. Cameras went up in the hallways and Plan A has been using them to track tenants and our guests entering and leaving our homes. Some of my friends and neighbours have been forced out, and now I'm fighting to stay after receiving 3 bogus eviction notices in a row. - Jon, currently challenging a bogus eviction

We know that our power is in our homes and on the streets with our friends and neighbours. But sometimes we have to fight back against legal threats. We've been very fortunate to get some excellent pro bono legal advice from lawyers who want to help the Park Beach tenants. However, there are still costs associated with fighting displacement. It costs $100 to file a dispute at the RTB and thousands in court fees to pursue a judicial review at the BC Supreme Court. We may also have to pay for legal advice from time to time.

The RTB gave Anoop an order of possession for our apartment even though we never received an eviction notice. They refused to give us a hearing and we had no opportunity to defend ourselves. Now our only option for canceling the notice is to appeal to the BC Supreme Court. We’re facing thousands of dollars in court fees to avoid this bogus eviction and our MLA has offered no immediate help. This isn’t justice but it’s what we have to do to stay in our home. - Paul and Ben, fighting their unfair eviction in the BC Supreme Court:

We can’t let predatory landlords bully our neighbours out of their homes and communities. Together we can fight back and win housing justice for all, now.

Thank you for your donations! Funds are to be distributed democratically by members of the PBTC in conjunction with the VTU's West End Chapter (of which PBTC are also members). In the event that Plan A and Majithia agree to end their attacks on PBTC, funds will be used to defend other Plan A and West End tenants at immediate risk of eviction.
