The Passing of Phillip Vargas

Donation protected
Phillip Andrew Vargas was a 3rd generation longshoreman, along with his two brothers, and a long-time member at Local 29. He'd been working at the waterfront since the age of sixteen. His union brothers call him an icon down at the docks. Phillip was a beloved husband, father and son.

Unforgettable to anyone who met him, Phillip was witty, smart and big-hearted. He was a man that never had a bad word to say about anyone. He loved all of his friends unconditionally. He recently bought a house with his wife, Heather, who is a beloved member of our San Diego Derby Doll community. Heather and Phillip were so proud of buying the home they had always dreamt of.

On Wednesday, January 3rd, 2018, Phillip went to work at the Port of San Diego to do what he loved. As his wife describes, his day consisted of "working and hustling like he always does." But what she didn’t know was that Phillip would leave the world that day. There was a tragic and fatal forklift accident that took Phillip from his loving family and friends.

With his new home and mounting immediate expenses, this fund is to help ease some of the financial burden this terrible accident has placed on his family.  With many unexpected costs and less than anticipated benefits, these funds will help his wife, Heather, stay in the home they worked so hard to earn and alleviate some immediate financial stress that comes on top of grieving the loss of her husband.  Without a life insurance policy in place to help and sufficient funds to get back on her feet, his wife will quickly end up out of their home after this tragedy.

Any contributions will help ensure she may stay in the house that Phillip’s hands, creations and love helped make a home. There is a great void in the world with Phillip gone. All who knew him will miss his bright spirit. Phillip is survived by his wife Heather, his mother Gay and daughter Kristina.

Please join family and friends at the celebration of his life on Saturday, January 13th at 1:30p at the Longshoreman's Union Hall, 1000 Bay Marina Drive, National City, CA 91950.
