New Tennis Courts in Patterdale
Donation protected
Located in the King George V Playing Fields by St Patrick’s Church, the tennis courts at Patterdale were established in 1939 thanks to a generous donation by Elsa and Ridley Temperley. Just imagine the scene back in the 1940’s and 50’s with the wooden rackets and the outfits of the day! Sadly in recent years the courts have fallen in disrepair and are no longer safe to play on. Despite this, one or two brave souls have given it a go during the Lockdown of Spring/Summer 2020 and we recognise there is a strong will locally to bring the Patterdale Tennis Club back to life.
The courts are in a uniquely beautiful location overlooked by Arnison Crag and Helvellyn with views of Ullswater. If the events of the last 12 months have taught us anything it is that our physical and mental health and well being is greatly improved through outdoor exercise. Tennis is a fantastic way to get fit, socialise and even make new friends and we see the regeneration of the Patterdale Tennis Club as an important part of the fabric of the Ullswater Valley Community.
The proposal is to fully resurface the two courts and to provide additional multi sport markings on one them to allow other sports to be played such as Netball/Basketball and Five a Side Football. The fencing will be replaced and we hope to instal a Smart Lock which will be integrated with an online booking system. Access will be via both Annual Membership or an hourly fee allowing locals to pay an one off annual charge and for visitors to Pay as they Play. The local Primary School will also make use of the courts and they will be actively promoted through the tourism in the valley. We have the full support of the LTA and have sought quotes from LTA approved contractors. The work is not cheap however and we need to raise in excess of £58,000.
So far we have applied for grants from District and County Councils and to other local benefactors and corporations who have generously agreed to give us some money and we have raised over half of the total amount. But we still have a long way to go and so we really need your help! Your donation, small or large will potentially enable us to start the works this Spring and have the brand new courts up and running for Summer 2021. Wouldn’t that be fantastic!
