Patti Weiss and Don Kutschall Need Our Support

I've known my friend Patti Weiss for over 40 years, and her well-being means the world to me. She has taught me much about perseverance, grace and humor in response to the challenges life sometimes throws us.

Unfortunately, she and her husband, Don Kutschall, are struggling with medical and living expenses as they make their way back from a rough year healthwise.

As many of you know, Patti suffered a traumatic brain injury in a 1989 car accident and made a remarkable recovery over the years -- one step and one day at a time. Her efforts to heal and put her life back together have greatly inspired those who love her. A 2019 fall significantly re-injured her brain, and she has since suffered mightily from vestibular dizziness and cognitive issues that make working difficult.

Patti's husband Don has struggled as well. In 2016, many of you generously contributed to his successful battle to beat stage IV throat cancer, and again in 2019 when he had L2-4 lumbar fusion, two more back procedures with six more screws requiring additional fusions from L2 to S2, and a total knee replacement. So far, 2022 has been equally challenging. Don underwent another back surgery, gallbladder removal, bladder cancer surgery, and chemotherapy. His bladder cancer prognosis is good; however, he is currently in the middle of his treatment regimen.

Don has only been able to work seven days over the last year, given his medical challenges. So far, Patti and Don have made it with a small buffer of funds, but these funds will fall short of the living and extra medical expenses needed during the coming weeks and months. They expect the shortfall to be about $25,000. As a professional driver, racing coach and instructor, Don is only paid when he works and is eager to return to working with his colleagues and students.

Our dear Patti is known for her candor, wisdom, and fabulous sense of humor. When you are Patti's friend, you are Patti's friend forever, and she is always there for you. I want to return the favor. Don has deep roots in both the arts and auto racing, two of the most supportive communities with which one could be a part.
