Patti's Fundraiser for Suicide Prevention

Today is the 49th anniversary of the day my mother took her own life. All these years later, I still miss her and it hurts to know that had there been more awareness of, and support for, those suffering from depression, addiction, and mental illness in the 60s and early 70s, the tragedy of her death at only 47 could have perhaps been prevented.

According to a study conducted by the Center for Disease Control, the incidence of suicide nationally has increased by 25- 30% since 1999. In 2016, nearly 45,000 people took their own lives. Many of them are young people suffering from depression and addiction, like my mother. To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide.
